Thinking about a career in the marine industry or are you looking for a new direction in your life? Then the Foundation Degree in Yacht Operations might be right for you and although the 2013-2014 term has started there is still time to enrol!

The Foundation Degree in Yacht Operations is available from South Devon College, Noss Marine Academy and is accredited by Plymouth University. This industry-driven qualification is all about preparing you for employment within the maritime sector, and combines industry-recognised practical qualifications with a Foundation Degree.

Over the two years, you will have the opportunity to study:

• Navigation
• Sailing and Powerboating
• The yacht industry
• Meteorology communications and safety at sea
• Team Leadership
• Advanced Navigation
• Yachting
• Boat Maintenance and Repairs
• Offshore Expedition
• Special project performance and racing

Teaching and Learning
You will be assessed in each module through various methods including coursework, presentations, practicals and end of module tests. You will be given assessment criteria, which are used to judge the extent of your achievement. There is a strong practical element to the course and the majority of study will take place at the Marine Academy based at Noss on the beautiful river Dart opposite the town of Dartmouth. Lectures and seminars will encourage group interaction, critical reflection, evaluation and presentation. The programme requires independent study and research activities.

Industry Recognised Qualifications
Successful candidates will also have the opportunity to gain the following RYA/MCA qualifications:

• Yachtmaster (offshore)
• Yachtmaster (coastal) with Commercial Endorsement
• Small Craft Radar
• National Powerboat Level 2 Certificate
• Diesel Engine Maintenance Certificate
• Yachtmaster Theory
• VHF Operators Licence
• Dinghy sailing qualifications

Employability and Careers
If you successfully complete your Foundation Degree, you will be able to progress to an appropriate BSc (Hons) programme at Plymouth University, such as:
• BSc (Hons) Applied Marine Sports Science at Level 5 (Year 2)
• BSc (Hons) Marine Studies (Ocean Yachting) at level 5 (Year 2)

Alternatively, you can go straight into employment. This may include working in yacht charter companies, coastal adventure and guiding, yacht racing/competition, working in national centres such as Plas Menai, sailing schools or skippering yachts in the UK and overseas, or outdoor water sports centres.
