In 2022 this boat was professionally converted to operate on electrical power. Two Bell Marine 20 KW electric motors were installed along with all required batteries and electrical systems. 72 KW hours of 48 volt LiFePo battery storage is aboard. The electrical system is installed professionally with marine grade components by Seattle Boat Works, which would also provide support for any future owner.

The seller provides the following information regarding speed and range:

On batteries only:
9 nm 1400 rpm 6 kts
14 nm 1200 rpm 5 kts
20 nm 900 rpm 4 kts
40 nm 700 rpm 3 kts

On batteries and generator using 5 gallons of fuel:
16 nm 1400 rpm 6 kts
23 nm 1200 rpm 5 kts
37 nm 900 rpm 4 kts
70 nm 700 rpm 3 kts

The original fuel tanks remain installed. The original Westerbeke 8 KW generator is aboard but is not operational. The owner uses a portable gas generator for battery charging (this effect is described in the chart above) .The diesel generator could be repaired to provide for underway battery charging, or a new DC to DC generator installed for maximum efficiency. The boat could then operate continuously at 4 knots through diesel generation underway with such a system to provide for long range cruising. As currently configured, the boat is entirely capable of completely quiet cruising on Puget Sound, and has reached Vancouver, British Columbia over a 3 day cruise (stopping at Port Townsend and Friday Harbor for overnight recharging).

Electrical systems include:
- Victron 3KW Battery Charger-Inverter
- True Charge 20 Plus Smart Charger

Broker's Comments

The Ocean Alexander 39 model is a lovely boat that offers fine quality inside and out. And -- this boat has another remarkable feature -- electric propulsion!

In 2022 the owner re-powered the boat as an electric propulsion vessel. Both diesel engines were professionally replaced with 20 KW electric motors by Seattle Boat Works, a specialist in electric propulsion for boats. A high-capacity lithium iron phosphate battery bank provides energy for nearly silent propulsion at a trawler speeds. More details regarding speed and range are provided within this presentation.

With many comparable boats typically getting 1 gallon per mile fuel consumption at cruising speed (at $5.00 per gallon fuel cost) the cost savings for operating this electric trawler are nothing short of astounding.

This boat is also a comfortable two-stateroom motor yacht with the signature high quality finish typical of Ocean Alexander yachts. Lovely teak interior paneling, trim, and flooring is found throughout the boat. The forward stateroom includes a walk-around queen bed in a spacious cabin. A large sun deck is aloft aft of the flybridge helm. And, the boat has a generous cockpit for convenience and docking safety. Current electronics include Garmin MFD chart plotters for the upper and lower helm stations. This would be a remarkable boat for entertaining, day cruising with friends, or overnighting in local waters. All at zero fuel costs.

The original four-cylinder Westerbeke 8 KW diesel generator is still aboard but will only run in limited capacity due to low pressure in one cylinder. It could be rebuilt for full operation to charge the battery bank underway for long distance cruising. With 310 gallons capacity in the diesel fuel tanks this hybrid diesel-electric combination would enable a very long distance cruising range. Note that currently there is currently no solar installed in the system and it has been suggested that this addition would greatly add to the range of cruise.

This unique boat is truly worth viewing if you value the space and luxury of a motor yacht without the fuel costs of cruising in one.
