In our Element are a team of four friends, who all work in the marine industry and are all experienced mariners, embarking on the challenge of a lifetime – The Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge - propelling themselves 3,000 nautical miles unaided from La Gomera, Canary Islands to Antigua.

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is an endurance race across one of the world’s most dangerous oceans. They will be enduring; sleep deprivation, dehydration, huge calorie deficits, hallucinations, salt sores, 60ft waves and physical and mental exhaustion as they navigate one of the busiest shipping zones in the world.

Pitting themselves against the elements, the four person team will be rowing on and off in 2 hours stints constantly for an average of 49 days, pushing their mental and physical limits – to raise awareness of ocean pollution and a real life solution to the global problem.

At least 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. Floating plastic debris are currently the most abundant items of marine litter. Waste plastic makes up 80% of all marine debris from surface waters to deep-
sea sediments. Plastic has been detected on shorelines of all the continents, with more plastic materials found near popular tourist destinations and densely populated areas.

In Our Element are using the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge as a global platform to raise awareness of plastics in the Ocean, and to helping find sustainable solutions to ending the ocean pollutions crisis. Promoting
and highlighting the outstanding work in this field currently being undertaken at Portsmouth University’s Centre for Enzyme Innovation, with any proceeds being donated to support this incredible work.

The Team say: “We are four friends who are united in helping combat ocean pollution, with our marine backgrounds we understand how vital the ocean is to our very existence, and we need your help. We need you to sponsor us and help us achieve a global following to spread the message of sustainable living and to promote the incredible work at Portsmouth University.”
